Meditation to Regulate the Nervous System
Many of us use meditations including self-inquiry as a way to calm the nervous system.
And it does just that.
However this is just the beginning.
The practice of meditation teaches us to relax and still the body, allows the breath become natural, requires we stop doing and rest in stillness.
Meditation and Self-Inquiry guide us to the step off the mind train, even for a moment, and this all offers a sense of deep relaxation. And more importantly often a glimpse of the spaciousness of our own true being.
That glimpse of peaceful presence in the spaciousness and the sensing of our own inner being or self can awaken a deep yearning to return to this space of peace.
These benefits are important and indeed a blessing for the busy, tormented and restless mind.
These are the preliminary steps in self-inquiry meditation. For we cannot truly Know the Self if we are tense and troubled. If we are running on empty and in a state of stress and anxiety. If our nervous system is burnt out. The practice of yoga nidra and various meditations have many benefits including calming the nervous system. They are important, offering deep healing and can act as a mental reset supporting our journey to inner freedom.
Self-Inquiry meditation goes deeper as it offers us a direct glimpse of the Self . When our nervous system is more relaxed and we are able to sit with the practice and go deeper – beyond the belief that we are merely a body mind.
And it calls us to take this knowledge into our daily life.
What happens when we step off the cushion?
This is even more important !
Do we go back to our old reactive patterns of stress?
Are we arguing with life again, resisting presence?
The practice of meditation in its highest form is just the beginning.
If we lasting peace is to dawn here…
We must apply our insights in daily life – walk our talk.
Are we putting our insights into action?
We see a lot of evidence to show we don’t, or the world would be a different place.
Meditation is not a PRACTICE it is a reset for CHANGE.
Deep transformative change if we contemplate on, and begin to live from the truth of our Being.
It is in the understanding of the truth of ‘who we truly are’ and then living from that place that changes everything.
It is the Gold at the end of the Rainbow.
So Keep going. Don’t give up each time we fall down. Get up and persevere, lovingly remembering who we truly are.
Shifting Our Identity to the True Self
Not the persona that we show the world. Not our vocation or preferences. Not our bank account. Not the story of me that is hard. Not the war, conflict and personality that is limited.
If we attach our identity and happiness to worldly achievements and material things we will be lost in a sea of disappointment.
‘I Am’ the awareness that contains everything.
Remember the freedom in the spaciousness of your being.
Let go of the rest… Be present to each moment… Don’t take life personally.
Focus on the sky not the clouds…the drama of life
Love for no reason. Happiness for no reason. Kindness for no reason. Joy for no reason.
And each time we fall, rise up again.. I am not that.
I Simply AM.
