A moment arises.
Someone says something.
Something doesn’t go the way we hoped or planned it to go.
Almost instantly, an emotional reaction occurs — perhaps tension in the body, a tightening in the chest, irritation, sadness, or defensiveness. We’ve been triggered.
The mind is very quick to point outward — They caused this. You made me feel this way.
‘Typical I’m always the loser, less than’ or perhaps ‘it’s anger and defensiveness.’
Yet if we pause and become self-aware. Take a breath and turn inward, even for a moment, a deeper truth may begin to reveal itself.
Our reactions are not truly about the person, event, or circumstance before us. They are signals — gentle messengers pointing us back toward something within that is still held tightly in the psyche.
These are the old impressions, the samskaras, the vasanas, the deeply rooted beliefs and conditioning that shape how we perceive the world. Our ‘pain body’ as Eckhart Tolle coined it.
They live quietly beneath the surface until life touches them and they rise into awareness. Usually as a reactive pattern, often repeated time and time again, until we notice it and let it go.
In this way, every reaction is an invitation.
An invitation to look within rather than point the finger outward in blame.
An opportunity to notice the patterns that have been silently guiding our responses for years — perhaps even a lifetime.
When we meet these reactions with self-awareness instead of judgment, something profound begins to happen.
The light of presence reveals the mechanism of the ego — the old story, the protective identity, the belief that must defend itself or prove something.
Seen clearly, without blame, shame, or resistance, these patterns begin to loosen their hold.
We discover how easily we have been moved by them — how our moods, words, and actions have been shaped by impressions we did not and would not consciously choose.
Yet awareness brings greater freedom. Old emotional reactive patterns unravel in the light of awareness.
The moment a pattern is seen clearly, we are no longer completely bound by it. The reaction softens. Space appears. The possibility of a different response arises.
Life then becomes a living practice of remembering.
Each trigger becomes a teacher. An opportunity to become self-aware.
Each emotional reaction becomes a doorway.
Each moment of awareness gently dissolves the old conditioning.
And slowly, what once controlled us begins to fall away.
In the light of simple, compassionate awareness, we are no longer slaves to these patterns.
We begin to live from something deeper — a quiet presence that was always here, waiting to be noticed.
This also opens the doorway to forgiveness, acceptance and a deeper love…
So I invite you:
Next time a reaction appears, pause and notice.
What samskara or old pattern is being revealed to you ?
Can it simply be seen in the light of awareness, without the need to fix, defend, or blame?
