TRE ® Tension-Trauma Release Exercise Therapy

A Simple, Body-Led Approach to Relieve Stress and Build Resilience

What is TRE® (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises)?

In a time of global uncertainty, many people are experiencing increased stress, overwhelm, and nervous system dysregulation. The need for effective, accessible tools to support resilience and wellbeing has never been greater.

TRE® (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) offers a simple, body-based approach to restoring balance.

Release Stress, Reclaim Your Power with Peace

TRE® is an innovative somatic (body-led) practice that supports the body to naturally release deep patterns of stress, tension, and trauma. This will increase available energy and confidence which is often eroded and wasted by worry and anxiety.

Once learned, TRE® can be easily integrated into your self-care routine and practised at home.

TRE® works by activating a natural reflex within the body — gentle neurogenic tremoring — which helps discharge excess stress from the nervous system.

This response is not something we need to create. It is already built into us – we simply learn to activate it and follow it.

When the nervous system becomes overwhelmed, the body instinctively seeks to return to balance. TRE® simply supports this natural process — calming the system, releasing stored tension, and restoring a sense of ease.

Benefits of TRE®

TRE® may support:

  • Grounding and Calming the nervous system

  • Reducing anxiety

  • Supporting recovery from PTSD symptoms

  • Releasing deep muscular tension

  • Reducing stress and overwhelm

  • Enhancing performance and focus

  • Increasing grounding and embodiment

  • Restoring balance and emotional regulation

  • Deepening intuition and body awareness

No Need to Rehash the Past

Many people feel exhausted from telling and retelling their story. I get it, and it can feel like we’re being re-traumatised. Or cementing us into a trauma pattern with that story.

With TRE®, there is no need to revisit or relive past experiences. This is a somatic Practice.

A somatic practice is one that works directly with the incredible wisdom of your body. Words are optional.

The body holds memory, and through gentle activation of its innate intelligence, it begins to release what is no longer needed.

You remain in control throughout the process, learning how to regulate your experience in a way that feels safe and supportive.

Over time, these natural tremors shift and change helping unwind accumulated tension patterns held in the body from past stress and life experiences.

Practising TRE® Safely

TRE® is simple to learn and accessible for most people, both adults and children. I teach one-on-one, couples and groups.

With guidance, you will learn how to:

  • Activate the tremor response safely

  • Regulate the intensity

  • Build trust in your body

This creates a sustainable, lifelong tool for nervous system support. A great tool for developing resilience – being able to rise to meet challenges and then to have tools to come back to a state of calm regulation.

What Results Can I Expect from TRE®?

Many people experience a sense of relief and greater grounding after their very first session.

When practised in a safe and supported environment, the body’s natural tremor mechanism begins to release held tension. This often leads to a noticeable shift — both physically and emotionally.

Some people report:

  • Deeper sleep from the first night

  • A sense of calm and relaxation

  • Increased awareness of previously held tension

  • Reduced emotional reactivity

Over time, with regular practice, these benefits deepen.

Because TRE® can be practised at home, you are able to continue the process at your own pace. With consistency, the body begins to release layers of stored tension, supporting long-term nervous system regulation.

Who Can Benefit from TRE®?

Supporting and regulating the nervous system is essential for restoring balance, health, and overall wellbeing.

In this sense, TRE® can benefit almost everyone.

By gently releasing tension and calming the nervous system, TRE® helps us feel more grounded, present, and fully engaged with life.

It can also be integrated alongside other practices such as yoga, exercise, and therapeutic work — enhancing and deepening their effects.

TRE® is currently practised worldwide by a wide range of people, including:

  • War veterans

  • Frontline workers

  • Those experiencing PTSD symptoms

  • High achievers and professionals

Founder of TRE®

TRE® was developed by David Berceli, PhD, through his work in war-torn regions in Africa and disaster areas.

He observed that the body has a natural ability to release stress through shaking or trembling — a reflex that helps discharge tension and restore balance to the nervous system. He noticed this in animals as well as humans. In fact all Mammals have this same ability to shake or tremor to discharge stress hormones. From this he developed TRE which is growing globally as a recognised somatic therapy with a lot to offer the world.

Today, certified practitioners around the world support others in learning this method safely — offering a practical, accessible approach to healing and resilience.

How is TRE® Different from Other Forms of Therapy?

TRE® is a somatic (body-based) approach that works directly with the nervous system, rather than through conversation or analysis.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, there is no need to retell your story or revisit past experiences.

Instead, TRE® supports the body to release stored stress, tension, and trauma through a natural tremor response. This allows deeply held patterns within the nervous system to gently unwind — without forcing or reliving.

This makes the process both effective and accessible, particularly for those who feel overwhelmed by more cognitive or verbal approaches.

TRE® is typically learned with a certified provider, either in private sessions or group settings, depending on your needs. Once learned, it becomes a simple and sustainable self-care practice.
